Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing

Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing is a mainstay of the Peterborough economy with 9,000 employees and a number of global brands and innovating companies operating in the sector.

Key disciplines include specialist vehicles, manufacturing technology and equipment, engines and turbines, fabricated metal goods and metal casting, and rubber and plastics.

The city is passing on its expertise through the new University Technical College, the Learning Centre at Perkins Engines, and the Innovation Lab at the Future Business Centre – a new facility for local businesses and entrepreneurs to rapid prototype and additive manufacture to test ideas and products. University Centre Peterborough – which provides engineering courses, workplace training and CPD – also holds strong partnerships with local engineering companies to ensure their training provision meets the demands of Peterborough’s growing businesses.

Agri-tech, Food & Drink

Peterborough’s nationally important agri-food industry generates around £4 billion of food-related trade each year. From organic, locally sourced produce, to international brands, our food and drink industry has a truly global economic footprint with companies like New Covent Garden Food Co., Bokomo, Del Monte, British Sugar, McCain, and Coca-Cola Enterprises.

Our rich local farmland represents about half of the Grade One agricultural land in England. Over 400 food manufacturing and food related firms contribute more than 6,000 jobs to Peterborough, covering machinery and equipment manufacturing, cold storage, packaging, labelling and haulage.

We have a flourishing financial and business services sector in Peterborough employing more than 27,000 people – nearly a third of the city’s workforce. The city has consistently scored highly in government reviews for its strength in this sector.

Our future city and Environment Capital  ambitions have attracted a buoyant utilities, environmental goods and services sector – currently comprising 380 businesses and organisations employing more than 6,000 people with a turnover in excess of £600m.

Key organisations influencing the sector and calling our city home include Aecom, CH2M HILL, Caterpillar Perkins, Royal HaskoningDHV, The Rolton Group, Dresser-Rand, Redring Xpelair, LDA Design and DNV GL, which has recently opened a new centre of excellence for smart energy and cyber security testing expertise in Peterborough.

The Water Innovation Network, Water Cluster and PECT are support initiatives helping local companies involved in the environment, energy and cleantech sector with networking, business development, shared best practice and events.
