Redevelopment of Peterborough’s South Bank moves a step forward with proposals for a £120m investment

Posted: 23/07/2015

The much anticipated redevelopment of the South Bank area has taken a significant step forward with the announcement by the Peterborough Investment Partnership that they plan to submit an outline planning application for the Fletton Quays site in September 2015.
The proposed development will deliver much needed homes, offices and a new leisure offering on the banks of the River Nene in the centre of Peterborough – regenerating a crucial part of a long-neglected area of the city, creating a vibrant and sustainable new community and restoring links to the river. The plans include the refurbishment of the existing listed rail buildings and their incorporation into the scheme, providing a link to the heritage of the site whilst also looking to meet the community’s future needs.

The plans include:
– Up to 265 high-quality homes
– Up to 166,000 square feet of office space
– Up to 160 bed hotel
– Restaurants, leisure and retail opportunities
– Cycle and pedestrian links along the south bank
– New public spaces offering views across the river towards the cathedral
– A dedicated wildlife area
– The refurbishment of the listed rail sheds
– The demolition of Aqua House at the entrance to the site
– Creation of hundreds of jobs during and post construction

The scheme, which is in tune with Peterborough City Council’s adopted planning policy, will be put forward by a joint venture partnership between the Council and Lucent Strategic Land Fund, known as the Peterborough Investment Partnership (PIP). Established to enable the development of surplus land in the Council’s ownership, PIP will help to support and sustain the growth and development of Peterborough by bringing new jobs, retail, housing and leisure facilities to the City.

Pram Nayak, Joint Managing Partner of Peterborough Investment Partnership said, “The establishment of PIP represents real commitment to the future of Peterborough. The development of Fletton Quays is key to the overall strategy for improving and revitalising Peterborough. We hope that people will be supportive of these plans to provide a much needed improvement in this area. Peterborough is the country’s second fastest growing city and we need to provide top quality housing and business premises if we are to thrive and sustain this level of growth.”

The plans will be available for closer examination at two public exhibitions scheduled for 12th and 13th August at The Key Theatre, Embankment Road, Peterborough, PE1 1EF, between 2pm and 7.30pm.
